The Medium Swamp Runner Kit was built to fit single cylinder engines from 8hp to 16hp.

These engines have a noticeable increase in torque from the engines that fit the Small kit.

This increase in torque allows you to plow through heavier vegetation and mud a lot easier.

Most of our customers use this Medium kit on jon boats 13 to 14 feet long.

This kit weighs a total of 58 pounds (not including engine).

The Large Swamp Runner Kit has the ability to fit many different engine types and sizes.

After many years of testing and hearing back from customers, we recommend the Predator 22hp or Briggs Vanguard V-Twin engines.

The Large kit weighs 75lb and will fit up to a 23hp V-Twin engine. Look below for engine compatibility.

Longtail mud motors like skinnier hulls. We DO NOT recommend putting a longtail on a boat with a bottom width greater than 48″.

Transom heights higher than 16″ are also less than ideal.

Most of our customers put this Large kit on boats varying in size from a 1542 with a 23hp v-twin up to lightweight 18′ boats.

The Big Block Large Swamp Runner Kit has the ability to fit the biggest engine Briggs Vanguard makes (40hp).

After many years of testing and hearing back from customers, we recommend the Briggs Vanguard V-Twin engines.

The Big Block V-Twin Large kit weighs 75lb and will fit most Briggs Vanguard engines from 25hp up to a 40hp V-Twin engines.

You will need to install an oil filter adapter to the V-Twin Briggs Vanguard Engines to allow a proper fit for the Swamp Runner kit.

Longtail mud motors like skinnier hulls. We DO NOT recommend putting a longtail on a boat with a bottom width greater than 48″.

Transom heights greater than 16″ are also less than ideal for a longtail.

Most of our customers put this Big Block Large kit on boats varying in size from a 16′ to 24′ boats.

Shafts:

Shaft Length

The 75″ shaft was designed for the Mini kit and is only offered for the mini kit.

It will NOT fit any other kit.

The 85″ shaft is recommended for boats with a maximum bottom width of 40 inches.

This covers most Small kit and Medium kit applications.

Go with the 100″ shaft if one or more of the following is true:

  • The bottom width of your boat is greater than 40″ or your transom is higher than 16″.
  • You plan to go faster than 25 mph.

The 100″ shaft is the go-to size for boats that have a bottom width greater than 40″ but less than 48″.

This means anything from a 1442 or 1542 to a 1648 or 1848.

The 100″ shaft is also for those with a smaller boat going over 25 mph. At this speed, you start to outrun your wake with an 85″ shaft. The 100″ shaft gives you that extra reach and a little more tail weight to keep the prop in the water.

The 100″ shaft is offered with our Medium and Large Kits.

We DO NOT recommend putting any longtail motor on a boat with a bottom width greater than 48 inches

The 110″ shaft is meant for boats that are around that 48″ bottom width and/or exceed 30 mph.

This is for bigger boats like a 1848 or a 2448 with a big 35hp or 40 hp engine.

We DO NOT recommend putting any longtail motor on a boat with a bottom width greater than 48 inches even with this 110″ shaft.

Call to order. The 110″ & 120″ have to be shipped by freight.

The 120″ shaft is meant for boats that are around that 48″ bottom width and are going faster than 30 mph.

Shaft Flavor

The Standard shaft is meant to keep prices low while still maintaining a high level of quality and reliability.

Key Features: Hardwood bushings + High carbon steel inner shaft

Hardwood bushings are preferred by the racers in Thailand, because of their durability and heat resistance.

With proper maintenance and care, this shaft will last many, many years.

The Extreme Duty shaft is the next step up from the Standard shaft.

Key Features: Bayou Bushings throughout + high carbon steel inner shaft

The Standard Shaft has hardwood bushing throughout the shaft to help support the inner shaft to keep it straight will rotating 1,000’s of times per minute.

This Extreme shaft features our propriety Bayou bushing where the hardwood bushings are replaced with our Bayou bushings.

This means decreased maintenance and better longevity of your shaft.

The Extreme Duty Saltwater Series is the next step up from the Extreme Duty shaft.

Key Features: Bayou Bushings throughout + stainless steel inner shaft

The main difference from the Extreme Duty to the Extreme Duty Saltwater Series is the inner shaft.

The Extreme Duty shaft has a high carbon steel inner shaft.

The Saltwater Series has a stainless steel inner shaft.

Both the Extreme and Saltwater shafts feature our propriety Bayou bushing.

With a stainless steel inner shaft outfitted with all Bayou Bushings, this requires minimal maintenance when compared to the other shaft flavors.

The racing shaft features a longer taper that will fit only our racing props. No other shaft has enough taper to fit the racing props.

The Racing shaft can come in any of the flavors offered: Standard, Extreme Duty, Extreme Duty Saltwater Series.

Racing shafts will not accept standard props or performance props.

Special order – you must call to order Racing Kits or Racing Shafts.

Tiller Handle

The straight tiller handle comes standard with the Mini kit.

A straight tiller handle works best with very small boats, canoes and pirogues with open cockpit and low freeboard.

The straight tiller handle has the potential to bottom out on a seat when the prop is lifted out of the water. This is especially true with the current style of riveted jon boats. That why we offer the offset tiller handle.

The offset tiller handle comes standard with the Small, Medium, and Large kits.

Our offset tiller handle has six different adjustment holes which allows you to customize and lock the position of your tiller handle.

This also allows you to adjust it for operating while sitting or standing. You choose!

Built ambidextrous. No matter whether you’re left or right-handed, ride on.

At times, Swamp Runner gets an inventory of unique tiller handles. If we receive other tiller handle options, it will be listed in the Build Your Kit page and put in the Parts Shop.

Additional Engine Parts

If you decide to go with a Honda engine, you will need a throttle parts bag.

This includes a cable swivel stop and cable crimp so you can easily hook up Honda throttle linkage.

Most Briggs/Vanguard, Predator, clone engines already come equipped with this hardware.

Prop Selection

Standard props are made of aluminum.

They have a standard pitch and ride very smoothly.

Fits all shafts EXCEPT Racing shafts.

We have size recommendations on each kit page, on each prop page, and on our Longtail Props Page.

Our stainless props are constructed of 304 stainless steel.

They are available in both standard pitch and weedless versions.

Fits all shafts EXCEPT Racing shafts.

We have size recommendations on each kit page, on each prop page, and on our Longtail Props Page.

Using a stainless steel prop will void the lifetime warranty on coupler housings and coupler shafts.

Our weedless props are available in both aluminum and stainless steel.

They have a negative rake to clear vegetation more efficiently and ride very smoothly through the water.

Our weedless props are heavier built than our standard props, so they tend to be more durable.

Fits all shafts EXCEPT Racing shafts.

We have size recommendations on each kit page, on each prop page, and on our Longtail Props Page.

Hurricane props are made of aluminum.

They have an increased pitch to maximize speed without increasing prop size diameter.

Fits all shafts EXCEPT Racing shafts.

We have size recommendations on each kit page, on each prop page, and on our Longtail Props Page.

Bullet props are made of aluminum.

The Bullet props have even more pitch than a Hurricane prop to really maximize speed without increasing prop size diameter.

Fits all shafts EXCEPT Racing shafts, and require a very light weight boat with a high torque engine.

We have size recommendations on each kit page, on each prop page, and on our Longtail Props Page.

Racing props are made of aluminum.

They are designed just for racing, and are recommended only for ultra light weight boat with high horsepower engines.

Only fits Racing shafts. Does NOT fit standard shafts.

We have size recommendations on each kit page, on each prop page, and on our Longtail Props Page.

Tips/Guides

The Prop Puller is THE tool to have on the boat for a longtail mud motor.

This makes changing out props a lot easier.

We highly recommend getting this tool, especially if you’re going to be experimenting with different props.

Having an additional prop nut can really save you while out on the water.

If you find yourself out on the water changing out a prop and lose the prop nut, that makes for a difficult time getting back to the ramp. If this does happen, you can use another prop to slide behind the new prop you are installing, tap the old prop while holding it against the new prop to force the new prop onto the tapered shaft. If it holds pretty good, start the engine, put it in the water, and get up on plane. The prop should stay on till you get back to the ramp.

Pro Tip: get an extra prop nut when you order your kit.

Have an extra prop on the boat just in case you break one.

Figure out which props you like and what runs well on your rig, and then order all of them in one go to save on shipping.

Every kit sold comes with a digital copy of the Owners Manual. This allows you to read over the manual and get to know your kit before it shows up at your door. This also gives you the opportunity to purchase any additional hardware and allows you to make sure you have the proper tools for assembly.

While being able to take access your digital copy from anywhere, and being able to use your smartphone or tablet out in the garage to assemble your kit, we understand some customers like having a physical printed copy so we give you the option on the kit customization page to choose.
